LFA-1 and Mac-1, two β2 integrin members constitutively expressed on neutrophils, mediate leukocyte recruitment cascade by binding to the same ligand of ICAM-1The slow rolling and firm adhesion of leukocytes rely on LFA-1 while the cell crawling is dependent on Mac-1We hypothesized that their distinct roles are likely attributed to the differences in the binding kinetics or in the diverse responses of outside-in and inside-out signalingIn this study, we compared the ICAM-1 binding features between soluble or membrane-expressed LFA-1 and Mac-1 with different affinity conformation using optical trap techniqueOur data indicated that the affinity up-regulation from wide type (WT) to high affinity (HA) is off-rate dependent for LFA-1 but on-rate dependent for Mac-1The structural bases of this new finding were found to be consistent with our previous simulationsThese results furthered our understanding in their function differences under shear flow.

It is inevitable that noises will be introduced during the acquisition of pulse wave signal, which can result in morphology changes of the original pulse wave, and affect the hemodynamic analysis and diagnosis based on pulse wave signalsIn order to remove these noises, an adaptive de-noising method based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and wavelet threshold is proposed in this paperCompared with the wavelet threshold method for denoising pulse wave, the proposed approach is more effective, especially at low signal-to-noise ratio.

Parasporins(PSs) represent a novel functional category of crystal proteins (Cry) produced by non-insecticidal Bacillus thuringiensisA distinct feature for PSs is their specific cytotoxicity against human cancer cells from diverse origins, other than hemolytic or insecticidal activityAs structurally/functionally Cry proteins, parasporins are expressed as protoxins that require protease cleavage for activationCurrently, identified PSs is classified into 6 groups:PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5 and PS6, which are heterogeneous in cytotoxic spectrum and activity levelSome PSs have been explored for their mode of anticancer activities, reports mainly include pore formation induced by binding to putative receptors on cell membrane and apoptosis by intracellular Ca 2+concentrationFurther work should focus on the identification of new PS or PS homologs and better understanding of their anticancer mechanism before possible application in cancer therapy.

In this paper, an approach to the design of hemispherical breast RF coil array is proposedThe target field method is applied to find the current density distribution on the hemisphere surface, which induces a homogeneous magnetic field in a hemispherical volumeThe components of current density are expanded into Fourier series, and the highly ill-conditioned character of the linear equation related to Fourier coefficients is solved using the Tikhonov regularization method with a minimum curvature penalty functionThe winding pattern was acquired using the stream function techniqueThe results indicate that a simple winding pattern with homogeneous magnetic field can be obtained through manually selecting the penalty factor.

Objective: The aim of this study is to establish the methods of four facio-cervical field's conformal radiotherapy (4F-CRT) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and to optimize the methods for clinical practiceMaterials and Methods:40 patients with untreated NPC of T1-T4 (1997 AJCC Staging System) were rolled into this study.Conventional and four facio-cervical fields conform plans were designed for each patient using Pinnacle 8.0 three-dimension treatment planning system (3D-TPS) as follows:1Improved plan, four facio-cervical field's conform plan, anterior, posterior facio-cervical and two lateral opposing facio-cervical fields; 2Conventional plan, two lateral opposing facio-cervical fields delivered to the target in each plan, only with the same dose dose volume histograms (DVHs) of the targets and normal organs, brain stem, spinal cord, parotid glands, and temporal mandibular joints (TMJs) were compared and the dose distribution were evaluatedResults: 1.The dose distribution of the improved plan could meet the requirements for the target volume2There was not any significant difference in the dose of spinal cord between the two plans. The mean doses of D max for brain stem in conventional plan were much lower than those in the improved plan, though both were within safety limits3Compared with the conventional plans, the improved plan significantly decreased the hotspot areas in the target volume and had better parotid glands and temporal mandibular joints sparing effectConclusion:Compared with the conventional plan, the improved plan provides satisfactory dose coverage to the tumor volume and better sparing of the parotid gland, TMJs and other normal tissues in external beam radiotherapy of NPC.

Integrase has become an attractive target for the design of anti-HIV inhibitor because it plays a quite important role in the process of HIV-1 virus replicationThe quinoline ring derivatives, which have the similar pharmacophore toβ-diketoacids, are the kind of integrase inhibitor with highly antiviral activityA series of quinoline ring derivatives were analyzed by the comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA), comparative molecular similarity induces analysis (CoMSIA) and Topomer CoMFA methodsFirstly, we chose 77 compounds from former papers as a dataset, followed by dividing it into the training set and test set randomlyThen, we constructed predictive models of CoMFA, CoMSIA and Topomer CoMFA, respectivelyThe CoMFA yielded the best cross-validated model with a q2=0.758, non-cross-validated r 2=0.988The CoMSIA model yielded a q2=0.701 and r2=0.986 while the Topomer CoMFA model has q2=0.661 and r2=0.966Through verification, these results suggested a strong predictive ability to the design of novel highly active HIV-1 integrase inhibitors for therapy .
